Nude beaches: El Cotillo lagoon beaches

North of the fishing village of El Cotillo, these are a series of beaches where the black volcanic rocks form small bays and lagoons of cristal clear water protected from the big waves so common on the west coast of Fuerteventura.

How to get there
The only town in the northwest coast of the island, take road FV-10 to El Cotillo. The first beach (Marfolin) starts right at the end of the old town. You can walk along it to get to the other two beaches (Playa Chica and La Barra). Around all of them there is a partially developed area with new appartment buildings and small houses. It is possible to follow the road among them and park closer to the beaches.


The beach
From the south, the first beach is the biggest. Known as Marfolin, black lava rocks alternate with long white sand areas. Although it is close to the town, is usually far from over crowded. The largest parking lot is on its north end, between this and the next beach (Playa Chica).
A rocky spur sets the boundary. To the north, Playa Chica and La Barra are hardly separable. They both constitute a crescent-shaped small beach. This is the most natural area, with only a few houses on the back of the beach, some of them maybe too close.
Even if the waves are smaller after breaking on the rocks, swimming is dangerous.

Services
There is only a small beach bar on the north end.

Nudism
It is possible in the three beaches out of the village. It is more common on the last ones, far from the appartments and the road. There are plenty of rocks and bushes in this section providing secluded areas for those looking for privacy. In general, the northern half of the beach is clothing optional.

I like:
  • Small beaches, different from the most popular long beaches on the east coast.
  • Still a "real" town, not a series of tourist resorts.
   I don't like:
  • El Cotillo is quite far from the rest of attractions in Fuerteventura. Anyway, the area is worth visiting.
