Barayo

The beach is included in a protected area in the mouth of the Barayo river, which divides it into two parts. The dunes behind the beach harbour an incredibly diversity of life, including otters that may sometimes be spotted on the beach. And behind the dunes there is a forest you have to cross in the way down from the top of the cliffs.

How to get there
There are two ways to Barayo beach. You can go by car to a small village called Vigo, near Puerto de Vega. Just before the first houses, take the road on the right to the parking lot. The easy (but long) way from there is a long path that goes down the beach with a gentle slope, crossing the forest and the dunes. The other option from the parking lot is the narrow path to the left that leads to the stairs carved in the cliff. More than 100 steep steps (you count them when climbing up) towards the beach. From this point, you need to cross the river to get to the main part, so you have to take into account the tides.

The beach
It is spectacular. More than 1km of fine grey sand, putting together the sections facing the sea and the river. The last one is wider and protected from the wind, but the sand is full of pieces of wood and debris dragged by the river. The other section is longer but narrower at high tide. At low tide, however, the sea withdraws leaving a huge flat area.
To the east, the beach finishes under high cliffs where you can find a cave flooded by the sea at high tide. It can be visited to enjoy the shadow and check the contrast between the sunny beach and the dark cave.

Facilities
Only in the villages nearby, but nothing on the beach itself.

Nudism
Usually, nudists concentrate in the area near the caves is naked. As we move farther we find less naked people, and nobody in the river mouth, the section preferred by most sunbathers. Nudists can also occupy the other end of the beach, in the river shore. Having said that, if there is not many people on the beach, you may dare to walk along the whole beach or go for a beach without a swimsuit.

  • The landscape and the view of the area behind the beach from the top of the cliff
  • The particular caves in the beach
I don't like:
  • The branches and pieces of wood in the sand. It is difficult to walk barefoot near the riverH
